Navigation and search
Menus
Menus live in your admin, not the theme: Content → Menus. The theme picks which menu to show.
Header → Menu chooses the main navigation. The default is main-menu, which every Shopify store has.
Nesting works two levels deep. A top-level item with children becomes a dropdown; a child with its own children appears as a column inside it. Deeper nesting than that is ignored rather than broken — if you need it, the information architecture is the problem, not the theme.
Desktop menu type switches between dropdowns and a full-width mega menu. Mega menu earns its space with many collections; with four top-level items it looks empty.
On mobile the same menu becomes a drawer, with parents expanding in place. There is nothing separate to configure.
Header behaviour
- Logo position — left or centre. Centre with many menu items gets tight fast.
- Sticky — whether the header follows the customer down the page.
- Transparent header — the header sits over the section below it with no background, for a homepage with a full-bleed hero. Set the transparent text colour and, if your logo is dark, upload a transparent logo; otherwise a dark logo lands on a dark image.
- Top bar style and note — the ink strip above the header. Set the note to something true and short. It can hide on scroll.
- Show search, show country, show language — country and language selectors only appear if you have configured markets in Settings → Markets; turning them on without that does nothing.
Search
Two search surfaces, sharing the same settings:
- Header search — the drawer behind the header’s search icon.
- Predictive search — the same thing as a section you can place on a page.
Both let you set a result limit and which resource types to include: products, collections, pages, articles. Only products are on by default.
Adding articles and pages is worth it if you have content people search for — sizing guides, shipping information. It is not worth it if it pushes products below the fold of the results.
Results update as the customer types and are keyboard-navigable: arrow keys move through results, Enter opens one, Escape closes the drawer.
Improving results
Result quality is Shopify’s, not the theme’s. If a product is not found by an obvious word, that word is missing from its title, description, tags or product type. Shopify’s free Search & Discovery app adds synonyms and result boosts, and it is the right tool for this — no theme setting can compensate for a product whose copy does not contain the words customers use.
Footer
Footer is built from blocks: logo, menus, newsletter and free text. Add a menu block per column and point each at a menu from Content → Menus.
Toggles: payment icons, policy links (pulled from Settings → Policies), the “Powered by Shopify” line, and Follow on Shop.
Add your policy pages before launch. The footer links to them automatically once they exist, and their absence is one of the few things that will actually block a customer from completing checkout confidently.
Social links
Theme settings → Social media. Fill in the platforms you use and choose whether the icons appear in the top bar, the footer, or both. Empty fields show no icon — there is no placeholder to remove.
